Public Health England has launched a major new adult health campaign to seize the opportunity for a national reset moment.
COVID-19 has affected the whole country; for almost everyone, life has had to fundamentally change. But it has also prompted many people to reflect and think more seriously about their health.
Nearly two thirds (63%) of adults in the UK are overweight or living with obesity. Gaining weight is often a gradual process that takes place over a number of years and modern life doesn’t always make it easy. This extra weight causes pressure to build up around vital organs, making it harder for the body to fight against diseases like cancer, heart disease and now COVID-19. By reducing your weight within a healthy range, you can help cut your risk of being critically ill with COVID-19.

FIT Magpies is a FREE health programme for men and women aged 35-65 who are looking to lose weight, get fitter, and lead a more active life. Notts County Foundation are delivering new courses through to 2022 for both men and women!
Delivered in partnership with Public Health England and the English Football League Trust, FIT Magpies has helped a wide range of people achieve long-term improvements in weight loss, physical activity, diet, and general wellbeing. Participants on average lose 5% of their body weight during the 12-week programme and make many new friends along the way! Our most recent cohort started in September 2020 with 23 participants losing a combined total of 158kg during the 12-weeks!
Participants are supported through their journey by a qualified and dedicated team of coaches who ensure every person feels included, motivated, and empowered to reach their targets. Each 90-minute session includes a physical activity session that introduces all participants to simple, effective ways of exercising (e.g. walking football, circuit training, aerobics, group walks etc.) some of which they can continue in their own time. Each participant receives a pedometer to ensure they are monitoring their daily activity levels and are asked to record their progress weekly and a free FIT Magpies t-shirt.
Classroom sessions tackle relevant topics such as the Eatwell Guide, takeaways, alcohol, portion sizes, and food labels. Participants receive a workbook that enables them to set targets, review their progress, and highlights areas for further reading.
FIT Magpies also seeks to provide participants with opportunities to further embed regular physical activity by educating participants with knowledge of local provisions that they can access. During the programme, participants are given a 1-week free pass to access the facilities at the Portland Leisure Centre including gym and swimming.
